How I Stay Grounded
This past week I’ve been feeling myself losing a little control, which says a lot coming from a mom to a 7-month-old. The delicate balance I’ve been able to cultivate since Jackson was born ebbs and flows day-to-day. My emotional state is fragile but this week in particular I’ve really come to lean on a few tools to bring myself back. These are tools I’ve been using for a while, so I thought I would share because they could help you too.
These tools are so helpful because of how quickly they work. When I’m sinking into a negative state and feel myself not wanting to do anything, I can rely on these tools to turn it around fast. The focus on being present in my body reminds me I’m a living, breathing human being. That gets me out of my head and whatever mindset spiral I’m currently caught in. Let’s get to it:
Hot and Cold Showers (when you have 5 minutes)
I honestly think this might be the quickest and most dramatic tool I mention. It’s hard to get the courage when you feel like doing nothing but if you can hop in the shower, you will feel a huge shift in a matter of seconds. There are no rules, just hop in the shower. When you’re done, turn the water a little hotter than you would normally for 30 seconds. Then, turn it to as cold as you can stand for 30 seconds. Do this a few times and feel the power. It’s one of my favorite energy boosters.
Aromatherapy (when you have 1 minute)
This one is kinda obvious but overlooked I think. The trick here is to find YOUR scent. We all have a scent that can transport us or instantly put us in a better mood. For me, that scent is Grapefruit. I love it so much. I keep a little bottle of it in multiple bags and in my bathroom cabinet to help wake me up and bring a smile to my face.
Feet in the grass/sand (when you have 10/15 minutes)
Earthing, grounding, whatever you want to call it, putting your feet in grass, water, or sand is a huge shifter for me. It’s like being plugged back into the power source. It’s subtle but powerful. You have to close your eyes and really feel the connection. This is compounded by being outside breathing fresh air as well. The two together can shift your state in minutes.
Sun on my skin (when you have 5 minutes)
Pretty simple. Sitting in the sun, actually feeling the sun on your bare skin, I find it to be magical. You can actually feel the sun changing the way your body feels. One of my favorite feelings.
Getting in the Water (when you have 30 minutes)
This one can take longer and you have to have access to a body of water. A bath can do the trick, but being in the ocean gives the best results for me. Not only am I surrounded (literally) by nature, all of my senses are firing and triggering to my mind how alive I am. The cold water on my skin, the saltwater on my tongue, the weightlessness I feel when floating, the enormity of the world around me, there are just too many benefits.
I hope this gave you some new ideas or at least reminded you of things you know you should be doing. Maybe this will be the little push you need next time you’re feeling low.
Just do it!
